HIDDEN TREASURE
15th December 2022

It was a pleasure to host an informal meeting in College at the end of November with members of Bellis and Guild. Joining us to talk about College’s Masterplan for our 34-acre, heritage-listed estate was Matt Peplow, CLC’s Head of Property Services.

As well as outlining the central pillars of the Masterplan including pastoral, academic and public-facing considerations, Matt discussed recent capital expenditure projects in more detail. Leading on to themes of maintenance and compliance and ending with the over-arching focus on sustainability, a key priority for CLC in the years to 2030.

Improving our boarding provision is a constant and dormitory refurbishments have recently been completed in Farnley and Glenlee as well as The Bridge and The Nest, College’s nurturing house for LC1 and LC2 pupils from St Helen’s and St Austin’s. Our heritage projects include an annual programme of repairs to the stonework on the main site as well as renovations in the Princess Hall, Marble Corridor and Main Library.

Alongside this, a programme of work has taken place across the Science wing ensuring that any modernisation of our historic buildings is handled sympathetically.

It is tempting to think that we know every nook and cranny of College with no new spaces or wonders to discover. Tackling a routine task this year an electrician was tracing some wiring into a space above the Physics Department and discovered an old gas light in the loft area.

Hidden treasure and a glimpse into the lives of our predecessors!

Thank you, Matt, for such a fascinating insight into the work of your team, giving us a new appreciation of what it takes to maintain the fabric of the school and its historic buildings.
